Police in Kosovo used water cannons and tear gas to disperse thousands of anti-government protesters marching in the capital, Pristina. The rally, which began peaceful, was the latest in a series of demonstrations calling on the government to resign over recent deals with bordering Serbia and Montenegro. Towards the end of Saturday's gathering some demonstrators threw fire bombs and stones towards the main government building, breaking windows and causing part of the building to briefly catch fire. Security forces then responded by using tear gas to push back protesters. Several injuries and arrests were reported. Opposition parties, led by the Self-Determination Party and the Alliance for Kosovo's Future Party, say the government's agreement with Serbia, which grants ethnic Serbs in Kosovo greater local powers and the possibility of funding from Belgrade, represents a threat to the country's independence. They also reject a border agreement reached in Vienna with neighboring Montenegro that they argue causes Kosovo to lose territory. Kosovo and Serbia were at war in 1998-1999, which ended after a NATO bombing campaign that forced the Serbian army to withdraw from the territory.
