Vote Leave director poised to quit amid internal squabbling

It came amid pressure from Arron Banks, the millionaire who is bankrolling the Leave.EU campaign, for the two to merge.

Mr Cummings has reportedly refused to join forces.

Mr Redwood, the MP for Wokingham who was Mrs Thatcher’s Chief Policy Adviser in the 1980s, said low wages were in part due to banks moving to low-tax regimes

A source close to Mr Cummings has said Mr Jenkin and another board member wanted himself and "people like John Redwood and Bill Cash" to be "the face of the campaign."

Vote Leave and the rival campaign Leave.EU are in a struggle for supremacy to win the backing of the electoral regulator as the official Remain campaign.

The director who is stepping down from Vote Leave has told The Independent that the organisation is "disorganised and not cohesive in any way" and that he "wanted to do something a bit more positive with his time."

The MP said: "I joined up because I thought the campaign was going to be about a positive vision for Britain outside the EU.

"But that is not the way it's turned out. It's just squabbling about who is going to say what and what different people think should be the emphasis of the campaign."

A source close to the campaign said: "We should be preparing our strategy and putting in place a ground campaign, but as it is, we're spending our energy fighting each other."
