Anti-nuclear campaigners scrawl messages on dead whale

The coastguard and local officials are understood to be investigating the claims.

The tragic animals are thought to be from the same pod of deep-sea sperm whales. They can easily get into trouble if they end up in shallow water accidentally.

The CND message was accompanied by a logo similar to that of the anti-nuclear group, but actually looked more like the Mercedes car manufacturer's badge.

Other messages included: "Fukushima RIP – man killed me" and "Mans fault [sic]".

One of the whales is later said to have "exploded" while experts were investigating the cause of death.

A "huge blast of air" came from the dead mammal as it was being probed by scientists on the beach, according to a BBC reporter. The bodies will need to be disposed of by the council in order to avoid them becoming a public health risk.

Scientists are looking into reports that the five whales stranded on beaches around Lincolnshire are linked to a pod of 12 sperm whales that washed up on the Dutch island of Texel and the German islands of Wangerooge and Helgoland since mid-January.

A CND spokesman said: "It's not been done by CND national office and we certainly wouldn't endorse such actions. We would condemn such action, it's not an appropriate way of campaigning."

Labour has been contacted for comment.
