Caption:A brief, shining moment of outdoor time.Ricoh launched its Theta S 360-degree spherical camera back in September, but it’s remained something of a fringe, perhaps slightly undiscovered device. Also, it costs $350, which is a little steep for a camera that essentially only does one thing. (OK, two things: You can also take 360-degree video.) Even though it’s not brand-spanking-new, Ricoh’s at CES showing off the Theta S, which, though it’s slightly bigger than the Theta m15 (really, so slightly), it’s bumped up the specs considerably. The Theta S has more advanced manual controls, can hold more photos, a micro HDMI port, includes live-streaming, and long exposure shot capability.
And where better to try it out than at CES? Ricoh lent us a unit to test out on the show floor, and if we haven’t painted a clear enough picture as to how overwhelming and over-stimulating CES is…well, we have now. As expected, the device is insanely easy to use (stupid easy, really): power on, choose video or photo, and click the only button available to you (which, for the record, makes an intensely pleasing sound). There’s a button to connect to Wi-Fi and set up your phone and Theta S (so you can use your phone as a remote shutter or immediately import photos), but surprise surprise, CES’s notoriously evil Internet made that a non-option. Happily, connecting the camera to the Mac and importing images was just as easy. Now: Bask in the terrifying glory that is a spherical view of CES. You’re welcome.
