The weather has been so bad recently that flood fashion is once again a political talking point. In December, David Cameron eschewed his expensive Hunters and toured the floods in Wellingtons worth just £13. Yesterday, Nicola Sturgeon – a socialist – raised eyebrows in a lovely pair of wellies thought to cost £130.
Wellies maketh the man or woman. Worn well, they are social levellers, beloved of models (Kate Moss), bumpkins (Compo from Last of the Summer Wine) and even the Queen. Worn poorly, they reveal an urbanite who has taken a wrong turn: think of Ed Miliband in his flooded wellies in 2014, looking quite lost. That year, Nigel Farage defied fashion and wore waders – making him resemble an angler. It didn’t catch on. The political wellies market remains a sound investment.
