Citymaps, the curated mapmaking company, has updated its iOS and Android application to include a downloadable option so users can access maps offline.
Now users can download their personalized maps and access them in areas where internet access is spotty.
The company, which recently announced a partnership with Songkick to provide local concert information to its users, said that its offline maps feature has been in development for a year.
“We wanted to build something that is able to give users peace of mind when it comes to roaming charges and Internet connections, especially while traveling or underground,” said co-founder and chief executive Elliot Cohen in a statement. “We know that 60% of the world doesn’t have Internet –and that access to data can still be extremely spotty and expensive.”
Using Citymaps, users can create and curate maps geared to particular interests and culled from 40 million locations like bars, restaurants, museums, stores, and performance spaces.
The downloadable maps that the company is launching also come with a pre-curated guide that lists places of potential interest for users.
