But Labour MP Toby Perkins will today call for England to find its independence when it comes to national anthems.
He said: "England is a component part of the UK but it competes as a country in its own right and I think a song that celebrated England rather than Britain would be more appropriate."
• Want an English anthem? It's time too God Save The Queen
The campaign group England In My Heart has already opted for Jerusalem as its favourite to be adopted as the new anthem.
The hymn could be heard being played outside Parliament this morning to support the case.
Eddie Bone, a member of the group, said: "It's about time England was able to celebrate being English at sporting events.
"Let the Scots and the Welsh celebrate theirs and then we come together at the end and sing God Save the Queen."
If MPs support Mr Perkins' Ten Minute Rule bill today it will go to a second reading.
