The other two officers are Derby XXX, a Swaledale ram, and Shenkin III, a Kashmiri goat, which serve with the Mercian regiment and the 3rd Battalion The Royal Welsh.

Mr Lancaster said: “Official military animal mascots are a long-standing tradition in our Armed Forces and carry out ceremonial roles and duties.”

A Kashmiri goat called Llewlyn has the rank of Fusilier which serves the 1st Battalion The Royal Welsh.

The Fusiliers also have a British Otterhound as their stand-in Regimental Mascot because its normal mascot - an Indian black buck - is an endangered species.

The MoD said: that the Otterhound “holds the rank of Fusilier and is fed dog food”.

The other animal mascots, none of which has a rank, are two Drum Horses called Alamein – but nicknamed “Charlie” – and Talavera, which serve the Queen’s Royal Hussars and the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards.

The Irish Guards have an Irish Wolfound called Domhnall of Shantamon.

All animals are fed on pasture forage and concentrate, apart from the dogs which eat dog food, the Ministry of Defence said.

The Queen met Cruachan IV when she inspected her Royal Guard outside the gates of Balmoral Castle last August when she was on her summer holiday.

Her thoughts were with the Shetland pony's predecessor, Cruachan III, now retired at 25, and who had been unwell with an infection in his tail.

The case for official mascot recognition is presented before the Army Honours and Distinction Committee.

By getting an official status, the mascot will receive a regimental number, assume a proper rank, with prospects of promotion and get its fair share of Army rations.

The Ministry of Defence said junior ranks did not have to salute the mascots which had officer rank because they did not hold the Queen's Commission.

It added that "regimental pets" were not included in the list because they were not kept at public expense.
