Robert Oxley, a spokesman for the Vote Leave campaign, said: “This is just the latest example of project fear emanating from the Government. Threats to immediately invoke article 50 are more about scaring people today than being honest about what happens after the referendum.
"After a Vote to Leave we will negotiate a free trade deal allowing us to trade with Europe without handing more power and more money to Brussels.”
Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty sets out a road map to leave the EU. The Prime Minister would have to write a letter to the President of the European Council notifying him of the intention to leave.
The council would then appoint a lead negotiator and a negotiating team and a two-year window to negotiate a withdrawal treaty would follow - if Britain decides it wants one.
Last year a proposed second referendum on the UK’s European Union membership was backed by two in five Britons in a new opinion poll.
The findings, published by polling organisation ICM, show 41 per cent of those asked would back a second referendum if the UK voted to leave the EU before the end of 2017.
Mr Johnson was thought last year to be in favour of a second referendum as it would be a “bold” move which could swing momentum behind the ‘no’ campaign.
