An impressive list of female business types and academics wrote a letter to the London Evening Standard on Monday expressing their support for staying in the European Union. Martha Lane Fox said: “Leaving the EU would be a disaster for the next generation of Britain’s entrepreneurs.”
I don’t know about entrepreneurs, but how about a disaster for the next generation of British women, Martha? Does that bother you at all? Have the signatories to that letter been watching the news, I wonder. The stories from Europe get darker by the day.
The latest horror from Sweden is the murder of 22-year-old Alexandra Mezher, apparently stabbed to death by a 15-year-old youth while working in a home for refugees. Alexandra’s family blamed politicians for losing control of the migrant crisis. Stockholm police have called for more resources, warning that the capital’s main train station is “over-run” by gangs who are “stealing and groping girls”.
"The political landscape of Europe is lurching dangerously to the right"
Meanwhile, the lovely, tolerant Danish parliament just approved proposals to make migrants hand over their valuables in an attempt to make Denmark “less attractive”. The political landscape of Europe is lurching dangerously to the right as it becomes clear that EU leaders don’t know what the hell to do. And this is the Union we are supposed to vote to stay in. Really?
Here in the UK, Ofsted chief inspector Sir Michael Wilshaw said yesterday that schools will be marked down for the first time if inspectors judge that wearing the veil – by students or teachers – is a “barrier to learning”. (How could it be otherwise?) Sir Michael said that people need to listen to David Cameron’s view that “our liberal Western values are protected”.
Good thinking. And the only way to protect them is to regain control of our borders. Any women with me on that?
